2018 Hyundai Kona SEL FWD highlights:

- Starting price, including destination = $20,450 base 6-speed automatic, front-drive. Reasonably equipped = $22,405;

- Just 1"-inches shorter wheelbase than first generation Hyundai Tuscon compact crossover SUV;

- Midpack among subcompact Cute Utes in cabin & cargo capacity;

- High cowl, low belt-line, long slung hood with wafer thin wrap around headlamps and contrasting dark roof for floating C-pillar = car-like Elegance;  Extensive lower body cladding; wrap around wheel arch cladding housing driving and tail lamps; and tall dark lattice mid to lower hexagonal grill = Assertiveness. Remarkable resemblance to 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee.

- Instruments = no nonsense analog cluster; Controls = no-fuss grippable rotary dials & button switches.  7.0"-inch touch LCD tri-split media screen = dashtop pod style, very intuitive, yet sure to offend some. Infotainment menus are highly decipherable and Android Auto/ Apple Car Play are included. Dark plastic trim is of varying grain but uniform hardness. Softening embellishing trim is woefully lacking.

- Houndstooth pattern upholstery & a light headliner are about the only contrasting themes in the cabin. Front buckets manage supportive with ample cushion, but need more height adjustment. Ditto the need for greater steering wheel reach. 60/40% split rear seat back folds nearly flat and the light lift-gate accesses a wide & tall cargo hold opening.

- Naturally aspirated 2.0L transverse I-4 engine + 6-speed automatic gearbox = adequate local locomotion, smooth shifts, and just enough motorway power in sport mode to survive on. The lack of direct injection = mellower sounds.

- Quick steering, a bit of road feel and responsive damping = planted, predictable handler; Ride compliance is impressively forgiving, Quiet cabin insulated against most wind and road noise.

- observed 33 MPG combined surpasses EPA estimates.

- SAFETY = 6 Airbags; Standard rear camera w/ predictive grid and available blind spot, lane departure, rear cross traffic warning and auto high-beam lights.

- INCLUDED = Typical high standard content offered by Hyundai = keyless entry, automatic headlights, tilt / telescoping steering wheel; rear fold-up armrest.

2018 Hyundai Kona SEL = MELLOW NEW BREW OF URBAN CUTE UTE
