If ever the cover art on political rock music album needs to be updated it is rocker Neil Young's album "On the Beach." The 1974 album cover prominently features a 1960's vintage Cadillac buried nose first into a beach, with only the rear tail fins above the sand. That image along with lyrics "I see bloody fountains, and ten million dune buggies coming down the mountains..." heralded the decline of American traditionalism and the rise of the anti-establishment movement particularly on Southern California beaches.

Earlier this year Volkswagen Group, whose classic "Beetle" inspired all those Baja Bug conversions, announced there will be no successor to it's marginally selling retro personal coupe, the New Beetle. If the People's Car is doomed to be buried in the sand like that fin-tailed Cadillac, then appropriately a final special edition is called the Volkswagen Beetle Dune.

What the 2018 VW Beetle Dune Is:

- Several ruggedized exterior refinements like simulated front and rear skid plates, dark contrasting body lower body cladding throughout and a 0.6"-inch lift, to a personal coupe which was delivered with a slightly less than assertive plastic daisy when the model debuted in 1998.

- A subcompact two door with the versatility of a hatchback.

- Powered by a transverse detuned 174 hp 2.0L turbocharged engine turning the front wheels with a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transaxle. It propels to 60 mph in the mid 7 second range and returns 29 miles per gallon of unleaded.

What the 2018 VW Beetle Dune Is Not:

- A Baja Bug dune buggy.

- Underneath is the platform of the previous Volkswagen Golf Mk. VI.  The modest lift, limited travel independent suspension, low profile tires, 4-wheel disc brakes and moderately hefted steering all designed for a smooth street ride, would get mired in soft sand dunes.

-For modest beach dune tackling Volkswagen happily sells customers all-wheel drive crossover SUV's, Tiguan & Atlas.

The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle Dune is for those dwindling few who appreciate retro nostalgia easy motoring, and feel less ashamed about not having to be spotted in a Barbie doll edition.

Priced at $26,685, Beetle Dune includes niceties such as power moon roof, automatic climate control, a 6.5" touch / gesture LCD infotainment display compatible with Android Auto / Apple Car Play, 400 Watt Fender audio system and cool night-time variable illuminated door speaker covers.
