No Single Size Fits All. However, More Sizes Fit That Many More.

At a time when individualistic active lifestyle counts for a lot, automakers have become keen to this lesson. Narrow new segments are slotting above and below old ones like major stock splits. The tailoring trend is especially evident among crossover and sport utility vehicles.

Japanese luxury car brand Lexus, already had a pretty deep activity vehicle wardrobe with two SUVs, (GX, LX), two crossovers, (NX, RX) with another Cute Ute on the way (UX).

Previously, Lexus has locked itself out of the all important full size 3-Row crossover ute segment. While the brand's best selling mid size RX has grown by 1/3 of its former self, it couldn't convey tykes and their all important grandparents with.

The 2018 Lexus RX 350L finally fills that slot with 3rd Row seating.

2018 Lexus RX 350L highlights:

- Starting price, including destination = $48,655 for a front drive 2018 RX 350L. Well equipped AWD version = $55,700.

- 4.4"-inches  longer, 232 pounds heavier and $4200 pricier than standard length RX 350.

- The trademark Spindle Grille nose knows how to garner like it or not attention. The least congruously styled of luxury mid size crossover SUVs loses liftgate rake and the C-D pillar "Floating Roof" grows to hearse proportions. Dapper, if less than wowing, appointments dominate the cockpit woods, leathers, stitching, tiering, and fabrics. Instruments mix ELD analog & digital fare. Dial and switch action mimics fine timepieces, though the finish is merely premium. Front seats prioritize accommodating over bolstering, Row 2 legroom is below average for segment and cushions. Row 3 legroom fails most any adult. Beyond reproach are body / cabin panel fit and the efforts made to deliver an utterly placid place to while the time away.

- Lexus engines and transmissions = Smooth. The 3.5L twin cammer's 290 hp and matched 8-speed automatic transaxle hard are wont to blister the road. Overboosted steering emits no sensation. Delivering about the most compliant ride available in any SUV. Pavement heaves impart only slight wiggles wiggles. Consequently, plenty of lean in corners progresses to early oversteer. The brake pedal is in dire need of shorter travel.

- 23 miles per gallon fuel economy = slightly above average for mid size V-6 crossover SUVs.

- Available with gas-electric hybrid powertrain as RX 450hL

- Standard Lexus Safety System Plus features Lane departure alert, keep assist, full adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance & pedestrian detecting low-speed braking and automatic high beam LED headlamps. Blind spot and rear cross traffic warning / mitigation = optional.

The 2018 Lexus RX 350L is a prescription which fills the popular luxury crossover SUV's Growing Pain Gap.
