There Will Be Strike [Vote]

image.attributes.post_excerpt
Today is a Board meeting day and also the big CTU event but in the meantime education news is dominated by the coverage of the CTU press conference yesterday and the increasing possibility of a strike vote commencing next month.  (Either CPS is trying to make CTU look bad for voting on a strike in advance of the conclusion of negotiations or CPS is also scared that the vote will actually meet the legal requirements and give CTU leadership authority to call a strike.) There's also news from Washington that Chicago would be eligible for a small, district-level version of Race To The Top. Jesse Sharkey looks like a young Antonio Banderas here, doesn't he... NATO, Newsweek

image.attributes.post_excerpt
Today’s news includes coverage of the NATO summit and related strikes, which include some labor and education issues, plus the entirely unsurprising news that Payton, Whitney Young (pictured), Northside, etc. are on the Newsweek list of top high schools.  Pretty much the same list as the US News list from a few weeks ago.  Lots... Today’s news includes coverage of the NATO conference (CPS is staying open), North Chicago’s financial woes, and Eric Zorn’s complaints about school robo-calls. At bottom you’ll also find coverage of a study showing that 7.5 million kids are absent every day and that attendance averages hide chronic attendance problems focused on a handful of students. Yes... 100 New Schools (60 Charters)

image.attributes.post_excerpt
UPDATED 11:50AM;  Finally some details on the proposed 100 schools we were hearing about last month, via the Tribune (here).  The gist is that CPS wants to create 60 more charters over five years, effectively doubling the percentage of Chicago kids who go to charters to 25 percent, plus 40 more other schools to make... NATO Nonsense

image.attributes.post_excerpt
Today’s news:  It’s NATO time, and that means protests and some school closings. Lowly student surveys turn out to be as good or better as the million–dollar observation rubrics that have been developed, so districts like CPS are going to start using them to help rate teachers.  Rahm’s poll results are out — not great... CPS Debunks Union Claims

image.attributes.post_excerpt
Today’s news includes a concerted pushback from CPS against some of the details and claims coming out of CTU regarding its proposals, plus an update on the new student verification process that has some people scratching their heads and a post-trial debrief with Hudson jury foreman Robert Smith, a CPS bus aide. Straw Poll On Teacher Strike

image.attributes.post_excerpt
Today’s education news will likely be dominated by the news that CTU polled its members last night about a pro-active strike vote, but there’s other news including lackluster science results for IL and the rest of the country.  Oh, and did you hear that Arne Duncan joined Joe Biden in voicing his support for same... Catalyst Takes Notice

image.attributes.post_excerpt
Today’s news is all over the place, with seemingly no rhyme or reason. The only thing notable among the group is Catalyst’s link back to this site (about the previous post).  Doesn’t happen much.  They also have a couple of stories about kindergarten readiness and special ed teacher evaluations.  What’s the theme at your school...
