Just 1 In 9 CPS Kids Attend Charters

The Sun-Times' Kate Grossman tells us the names of the the 10 CPS charter schools that may open in fall 2014, which is great to know (we only knew the number before). But at the same time the Philly Notebook reminds us that it's other cities like the City of Brotherly Love (plus New Orleans and Detroit) that have the highest percentages of charter students among big districts.

LA is way ahead of Chicago with 18 percent, NYC is way behind with 6 percent.  Chicago has just 12 percent. Miami-Dade is at about the same level (13 percent).

Amazing how much time and energy (and anger) gets focused on charters when they're (so far) just not that much of player. District schools dominate over charters nearly as much as Apple iPads dominate over Droid tablets.

  • CPS currently has 138 charter/contract schools with 10 approved for next year and 21 additional proposals over next 2 years. District school budgets were slashed this year while charters got an increase of $80 million, following $76 million the previous year. There's nothing amazing about the focus - the school district has faced massive deficits and continues to do so next year and is expanding rapidly when they don't have the dollars to do so. It's amazing that more people aren't calling that into question. The deficit appears and disappears when convenient for the school district.
