Remembering Phil Hansen

Longtime CPSer Phil Hansen passed away earlier this week. I first came to know the Beverly native when I was editing a 2004 book about the Vallas era. Hansen had been Vallas' accountability guy -- not an easy or popular job -- but was happy to help out with a chapter about the difficult process he'd gone through telling schools they weren't doing good enough and trying to help them do better.  Then again a few years later, Hansen helped steer me to some important stories when this blog was first launched, sending me notes and occasionally commenting.  Here's a 2009 example (The Sherman Experiment, Part II (Hansen Speaks!).  In addition to Phil's help over the years, I always valued his positive, kind demeanor.  We didn't always agree about the process or the results, but he was unfailingly kind and supportive and that's not such a common thing as you might expect.
