Closings, Nationally & Historically

In all the hullabaloo surrounding the current proceedings, it's easy to forget that schools get closed (and opened) all the time in Chicago and elsewhere.  This recent Wall Street Journal piece (More Schools Are Shut ) notes that nearly 1,100 district schools were closed in 2011 nationwide -- out of roughly 100,000 schools -- and 128 charter schools -- out of 6,000 or so.  This wikipedia page lists a slew of closed CPS schools over time, including some that were repurposed and others that were shuttered or torn down.
