A Discussion Page For Every School?

So the New York Times and the local NPR station there (WNYC) are collaborating to start a new schools site called SchoolBook and one of its main features is having a discussion page for every school -- public and private -- so that folks can talk about what's happening there throughout the year.  It's an idea I've wondered about for years, knowing that some of the most interesting discussions here are about what's going on at a specific school.  Sometimes we get parents, teachers, and even kids from those schools weighing in -- usually around some controversy or change of policy.  So what I'm wondering is whether you think something like that would be good for the coming year -- basically a place where you could start or join in on a conversation about a specific school, or read up on one you were interested in.  Unlike the blog updates, the school discussion posts wouldn't go away into the archive in a few days as new news comes in.  Some would be more active than others, but that's fine.  Or maybe this already exists -- does NPN have it, or is this already being done on Facebook or something?  Let me know.  Just a thought.

  • one way to go would be to start small - to pick a school or two in each part of the city that seems interesting and see if anything builds, rather than jumping straight into a free for all.
