Springfield: Unclear Whether "Trailer" Bill Matters

image from 3.bp.blogspot.comChicago Journal checks in on how people are feeling about the reform bill heading towards the Governor's desk (Major changes for Chicago schools) and notes that many area principals are waiting to see about the "trailer" bill that has been discussed as a fix to the current legislation.  I'm hearing that the supplemental fix may actually happen but would the trailer bill make a difference in how people see the legislation, or in its real-world impact?  My guess is not really.  Opponents will still think of the bill as a union-buster, and supporters will still think the bill is, well, the best thing since sliced bread.  Seventy five percent of voting members is still a pretty high threshold for a strike, and there are still plenty of implementation problems and escape clauses for local unions and districts.  What's your take?

  • 75% of Union members voting to strike is very easy this year....if Rahm expects us to work extra for NO pay...100% will walk in my school.

75% can ONLY happen if it is of Union members who voted! That's one of the reasons why the language must be changed in the trailer bill.

  • In reply to ubiestmea:

I think it is important to remember that we don't need 75% of those members voting to approve a strike. We need 75% of the total membership to approve a strike. Two different things. I think it will be very hard to get 75% of our total membership to approve anything. There will always be lots and lots of teachers who won't bother to vote at all and every non-vote counts against us. I suppose anything is possible, but I wouldn't count on either outcome.

    Dear teacherparent, I agree!

Revenge is best served cold....one day the Democrats will need our VOTES and guess what...they aren't going to get them....sit out the election and make Madigan the minority leader...it can't get much worse...with friends like this we may as well start a third party

the tribune's worried that the trailer bill will happen and that it will go too far
