I "Like" City & County Merge In Memphis

image from media2.myfoxmemphis.comAfter a ferocious debate, Tennessee voters backed a proposal to merge the Memphis city school system with its surrounding neighbors, effectively consolidating city and county school systems (Memphis Votes for County to Run Schools).  Obviously, CPS and Cook County are a whole lot bigger than Memphis, and city/county mergers don't always work out as well as anticipated (didn't they try this in Kansas City, too?)  I know we're in an era of smaller government, not making things bigger, too.  And of course there's no way the new mayor would let it happen.  But still, I'm intrigued.  A merger would address lots of racial and property tax issues, and presumably end the residency requirement about which I'm anticipating that most of you are about to comment on.

  • Eh, Cook County burbs are just as economically segregated as the city proper. For every New Trier you also get a Morton or a Proviso and a whole lot of mediocre.
