Update: More About Payne
Last week's post about the appointment of Charles Payne as CAO generated lots of concern and even anger among commenters about Payne's U of C connections and his academic field of sociology but, having listened to this audio tape of a recent speech Payne gave (yes, at the UofC) made me think Payne isn't necessarily the person that people might think he is. He's informal rather than snooty. He's helping with the Englewood promise zone initiative. He talks about the current war on teachers and teachers unions and the current fad for charters. He talks about what data can -- and can't -- do. His main focus seems to be figuring out why some big cities with poor minority student populations do better than others. He's not charter vs. neighborhood, but rather Chicago vs. New York.
