  • That just cost Rahm 50 thousand votes or more.

  • Given that Mr. Emanuel has taken a position against public sector workers to strike, and against maintaining pensions for existing public sector employees and retirees it would appear that the Chicago Federation of Labor now must oppose him. I think Mr. Emanuel believes the labor movement is broken and public sector workers' pensions are viewed as a burden by the public so he gets benefit from his position in the election. That is an interesting polical calculation indeed.

I think "miscalculation" is the word you were looking for.

  • One more thing, Rohm will cut teachers' pensions but no mention of judges, aldermen or mayor pensions!

  • They were promised a pension, they protected our streets, taught our kids, saved our homes, and all we have to give in return is a bundle of broken promisies.

  • Do you really think that the three I mentioned will be subjected to any cuts?

  • reality check about the tax increases and the budget mess from jim broadway you might want to read

  • He just lost my vote....and 30,000 other teachers, 20,000 other city workers and most of their families...oops...probably just lost the election

  • Excellent point. I am smelling a strong stink of sexism in this -- not sure anything trumps the boys club.

  • ??? Sexism, racism, and classism are ALWAYS part of the facts, silly! What planet do you live on???

  • Don't assume the Rohm supporters are actually teachers. They could be Rohm employees patroling sites like these. It's election time and dirty politics are in full swing. Just ask Jesse Jackson jr.

  • I'm sure he has several "golden parachutes" at the ready. And maybe even a few hidden platinum variety. I don't begrudge him that, just don't tell me how good I have it while you are definitely out to get yours.

  • I am not happy about Rahm's position on education. However, his election could be a good thing, not only for the city, but for the CTU. If he legislates out teachers' right to strike that might be the key that unites teachers to walkout. If they don't care enough to do that, then they deserve whatever s--t gets thrown their way. If today's teachers are too mealy mouthed to back the union 100%, well...you reap what you sow. I am a retired teacher who walked out every year a strike was called. No-one dared cross the picket lines in those days. Will the teachers rally round CTU today? We'll see.

  • P.S. Don't blame Rahm if teachers are too cowardly to fight for their rights.
