Turnarounds: Should Parents "Trigger" Reforms?

image from www.newlaunches.comChicago likes to claim that LSCs are the most democratic school governance system in the nation -- but in California parents can vote to put their school in turnaround if they're not satisfied with the pace of change.  Here's lots of coverage to look at -- from the LA Times (Parents present signatures to take over a Compton school) and the LA Weekly (California's Parent Trigger), the NYT (In Compton, Calif., Parents Force School Overhaul) and AP (Compton Parents Use New 'Trigger Law' To Demand Charter School).  Word is that the approach is spreading to other states.  What do you think about having such a thing in Chicago?

  • Our neighborhood school used to be controlled by the principal who controlled the LSC. It was a very effective strategy for her to have complete control over the school. Too bad she didn't use her power for good instead of for bad. Which, is why we left for a significantly better magnet school.
