KIPP Ascend Fundraiser / Expansion Update

viewer.png

The folks at KIPP Ascend are having a dinner and silent auction on Feb. 26 to benefit the school.  KIPP co-founder Mike Feinberg is going to be the keynote speaker.

KIPP is controversial for many reasons, not the least of which that it's a charter network started by a couple of smart-ass white guys.

But there are also a lot of hard-working, dedicated people working at KIPP schools in Chicago and nationwide, and KIPP includes one of the nation's only unionized charter schools (KIPP AMP in Brooklyn).

KIPP Ascend has been around since 2003 and is now located on South Avers (North Lawndale) at Penn Elementary.  I'm told the school is expanding to the elementary grades next year, starting with kindergarten next year.

Feel free to let me know about any other school-related fundraisers or community meetings, retirement or going away parties, or happy hours.

  • I wish KIPP well. But we do know that ACT Charter used to have a fundraiser every year and, according to their publicly-filed 990s, they lost money every time. So here's hoping KIPP has a better plan.
