Check out this CNN.com video for a new interview with one of the students who was involved in the brawl (and whose brother delivered the final blow to Albert):

  • Suntimes story on Michael Scott's business interest and support for charter school deals: Not discussed in this article is the Fogelson Family Foundation and its funding of the Noble Network of Charter Schools or the relationship between the Fogelson family and the Young Women

How does your comment relate to this thread?

  • In reply to AlexanderRusso:

Scott road the bus to Fenger that how: Since January, Scott had been getting paid an undisclosed monthly fee from developer Gerald W. Fogelson, according to B. Timothy Desmond, president of Fogelson Properties Inc. At that time, Scott, a real estate developer, had an ongoing business relationship with Fogelson. Fogelson provided Scott with a rent-free office at Fogelson Properties' offices in the 1400 block of South Michigan. Scott also had an e-mail address at fogelsonproperties.com. He has told a Chicago alderman he wants as much as $500 million from Chicago taxpayers to help pay for the project. He also wants to swap some land with McCormick Place. From today's Suntimes.

Retired Principal said: D. Albert was fighting on the side with the "ville" against the Atlgeld Gardens students the day he was killed!

  • In reply to AlexanderRusso:

Well DUH! Derrion Albert was in his community. The boys from Altgeld Gardens were forced to fight their way up 111th Street from the bus stop at 111th and Wallace to 111th and Michigan where they would be able to get on the No 34 bus to the Gardens. Even the most cursory look at the situation would reveal that Derrion was on of the antagonizers in that situation.

Here is a little more. If the school or the Chicago police would have provided just a little bit of protection at the bus stop at 111th and Wallace, there would not have been a fight. No matter what people think, fights do not break out in front of the police. The problem is that the school security force did not think their jobs were to protect students (and that is a very big distinction) in the same way that the police do not feel it is their responsibility to protect young black males (and not very many females when you think about someone murdering 11 women in Englewood and it went unnoticed).

The thing is these kinds of fights happen all the time and they happen because the police get there in time to make arrests but make no real effort to prevent them. I know this because my son was snatched off of a bus stop by his school and the security force said they did not protect the bus stop. But what they and the police fail to realize is that they are not protecting the bus stop they are supposed to protect the students at the bus stop.

Derrion's death was 'accidental', in the sense that if you are in a group fight, the one thing you can not do is hit the ground or the group will kick your ass. UNfortunately for him and his family, a rather routine action played out with his death. It is almost akin to someone falling off of a garage roof and breaking their neck. It happens but it is rare.

I do not want to hear any shit about those boys fighting because the truth is they all would rather not have been fighting, but there was no one there to stop them, like there is no one there to stop twelve year olds from climbing on the roof of a garage.

The boys the arrested for his death should really be acquitted via self defense and the malevolent care of the adults entrusted to protect them.

Thank you Dr. Don Frymd for your tuenaround at Fenger!
Deontea Jones, 16, said he doesn't turn to Fenger teachers because they are too timid to get involved in student squabbles. "Most of the teachers are scared. They ain't gonna resolve nothing. They are only going to make it worse." If another kid gets suspended for fighting, Jones said they will only "come back and come back harder." Dr. Frymd should be reported to DCFS!!

  • In reply to AlexanderRusso:

Probably oughta get his name right, at least: it's "Fraynd", not "Frymd". Just sayin'...

  • In reply to AlexanderRusso:

either way, he is responsible for the destruction and student injuries and death at fenger. Caver space should be given back to Altgeld and FRAYND should be fired, but Ron will protect him always and very well.
