Duncan Showed How To Respond To Undeserved Recognition

Politicians and political appointees often seek (or are offered) accolades that are not yet deserved. This doesn't usually stop them from accepting.  But it seems worth noting now that a year ago, when he was still just the head of the Chicago schools, Arne Duncan actually turned down an award from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence because he felt like he didn't deserve it. Past recipients had included President Clinton, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and members of the U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate. But Duncan turned the award down, as he should have.  Youth violence had been on the upswing for several years in Chicago. Eight school-aged children had already been killed in the first month of the year.  So Duncan gave an emotional speech, received a standing ovation from the audience, and left the award behind.  Click here for more.

  • I remember this story from last year, how Arne choked up and the tears flowed for dead children. His emotional nature showed at the press conference on Wednesday, too. I think it is genuine. I think those are real tears.
They are just as real as the tears that flowed from former President George W. Bush when he would visit the graves of fallen soldiers or the bedsides of the wounded. He is an emotional man too. His tears were real.
The sad irony is that the deaths of the people for whom they are crying came about from situations that they, themselves, created -- Bush with a bogus war in Iraq, and Arne with Renaissance 2010. It may seem incongruous that they are so torn up over deaths that they are at least partly responsible for bringing about, but they also strike me as being not too bright.
I am an emotional person too, but I cry for all of us who allow such stupid people to have such a major influence over our world.

  • In reply to QuietObserver:

You are completely ludicrous. . . the situation that caused depraved young men to kill an innocent young man with a wooden planks had nothing to with Arne Duncan or Richard Daley . . . and fools like you diminish the responsibility of the perpetrators, their parents, their families and their communities when you try to lay it elsewhere. It's disgusting.

  • ANY STUDENT FROM ANY CHARTER SCHOOL THAT IS RELEASED FROM, KICKED OUT, PUT OUT, COUNSELED OUT OF, TRANSFERRED FROM, ETC., THAT CHARTER SCHOOL TO A CPS SCHOOL; THIS IS ILLEGAL! PLEASE CALL MR. PATRICK ROCKS, CPS LAW DEPARTMENT AT 773-553-1700. HE WANTS TO KNOW AND MUST BE INFORMED WHEN THIS HAPPENS. CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THIS. THE PARENTs AND/OR THE CPS SCHOOL MUST CALL AND REPORT THIS TO HIM. LEAVE A MESSAGE WITH THE DETAILS AND KEEP A RECORD OF WHEN YOU CALLED AND WHO YOU SPOKE TOO. PLEASE HELP TO MAKE CHARTERS STOP DOING THIS ILLEGAL ACTIVITY!
You see, now that it is after the 20th day, charters now get rid of their students.

  • How does 20th day affect charters? Is it true that at that day, or some other, that charters keep the student "head charge" from CPS? That when they push out students, the money does not follow the student to the new school?

  • I'm sorry to disagree but if Duncan really knew how to respond to undeserved recognition, he would have turned down Obama's cabinet appointment. He is clearly out of his league and has always been so as far as education policy is concerned. At this point, Duncan has been promoted to the level of his incompetence.

  • Hey "district299 reader" explain the charter, 2oth day thing to me. I don't understand???

  • Charter school report shows scores of Chicago charters are 'failing' as measured by Illinois tests. Scores of Chicago public schools are being closed for performing poorly on the state tests and replaced by charter schools.

good article by jim vail breaking down the charter success myth and continued corrupt spending despite the failing statistics.

  • when the charters kick the students out of their schools, the money form CPS to them per students' does NOT follow that student to the neighborhood school where the kicked-out student by the charter schools have to go. The neighborhood school will also NOT get any credit for free lunch $ (about $750 per student) because the charter students were kicked out AFtER the lunch forms entry date for the money credit. The charter schools, where these students no longer attend, will get the money next year as well. hope this explains this cheating mess....
