Update: Beating At Fenger Caught On Video

You may or may not want to watch this amateur footage of the melee and beating that took place last week, but I'm posting this for those who will want to know about it.  Be warned, it's graphic and disturbing:

  • From Anonymous: It seems like this turnaround strategy has taken the school backwards. After you purchase new furniture, books, and get a huge capital upgrade you still must connect to the population that you service. From news reports and community members you understand that Fenger has been up for grabs since the second week of school. Shots were fired that morning. Why wasn't the school on high alert at dismissal. This is only week four. Do we expect the police department to hold roll call there all year. Changing an entire staff and replacing them with inexperienced ones does not work. Turnaround should have seen this coming. There lack of understanding of a community is to blame. I agree that whoever is leading this turnaround strategy is in over their head. I just hope more blood isn't shed before we realize it.

  • From Anonymous: You asked for leadership? How about the love and leadership of Jesus!

  • From Maybe Not But...: It may indeed have nothing to do with the principal. But there is no way that adding to the instability in the community by completely destabilizing the school is helpful. Schools need to be able to model the concept of community for the students. Turnarounds make this much more difficult.

  • CPS Mom: This has nothing to do with the Principal at Fenger. It has to do with so many things on so many different levels and the least being the Principal at Fenger. What I saw on the street was pure Hatred and Disregard for human life.

  • Frymd Is Guilty: What about Frymd and his turnaround strategy? He got rid of teachers the Fenger students new and trusted. He ousted the principal who had gained trust with the students as well. Frymd is in over is head and is causing the ruckus. Shame on Arne for doing this when Frymd's own LSC wanted no more of him and Ron allowing him and Frymd's poor plan to stay. Shame on them!

  • Dazzling Dayna: I don't think that it's up to Mayor Daley to help the community prosper. I believe the lack of participation as a community is the core of the issue. Nowadays we're too greedy to care about others. If neighbors were to work as a community situations like this could be avoided. Helping each other by taking turns picking up their children from school, looking out for one another, lending a helping hand is easy to do but yet it's avoided and is a necessity in such a dangerous neighborhood.

  • Anonymous: This is the saddest thing I have ever seen. There has to be something we can do as concerned parents. IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD!!!! The village elders are afraid of helping the "good" children because we might get shot or hit with a stick. Mayor Daley needs to pay more attention where attention is due instead of always trying to line his pockets and the pockets of the already wealthy here in Chicago!!!!!

  • Bob: How do you like my world?
Imagine that INSIDE a school hallway.
Adults ,men and women, from the community building picked him up.

  • No Olympics: The IOC is nuts if they give Chicago the Olympics! We are a violent and killing city.

  • CPS Mom: A group of Crane students were in a fight at the corner of Hoyne and Washington last week. My friend was driving her children home from a nearby school, she was very shaken by what she saw. The police response was so bad that she had to stop a police car a few blocks away.
When she called 911 all they wanted to know was if there was a gun. Meanwhile kids and grown men were in the middle of Washington blvd!
Let's not forget this all happened at Crane HS, last year. Adams and Oakley was filled with kids fighting and the one student was killed. These neighborhoods and schools are time bombs! kids grow up with no conscience or feeling for there own brothers or sisters.

I would like to mention also that at Fenger it was the young women who stepped up to carry this boy to safety. I did not see one male figure helping. I saw the boys just jumping aruound high on adrenaline acting like fools!

  • From Anonymous: While I understand being scared of the crowd and all, the operator of the camera sounded old enough to be able to step in if he so chose. Did he chuckle at the end of the video?

  • James Williams: WELL BLACKPEOPLE ALL OVER AMERICA, HERE'S THE DEAL. OUR PROBLEM IS LEADERSHIP. LEADERSHIP WITH 'VISION'. THIS TYPE OF SENSELESS KILLING NEED TO AND MUST BE STOPPED. WE AS A PEOPLE, WE DON'T SEEM TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE TUFF DECIDIONS. ANYTIME YOU KILL A HUMAN WITHOUT GOOD CAUSE, THE PRICE FOR THAT IS,' DEATH'. ( WE SEEM TO NOT KNOW HOW TO MAKE THAT CALL) THAT IS THE ONLY WAY THAT WE WILL STOP THAT TYPE OF KILLING. WE MUST STOP MAKING EXCUSES.

  • It time for all Chicago citizens to hold the mayor and the other elected officials accountable for the big mess in our school system. Chicago has tried every school reform strategy in the book and the only ones that have improved are the fat cats with the contracts. The latest is this group from I believe Philadelphia that's going to tell us how to handle chicago problems, oh by the way they are being paid 5M Dollars. Chicago has tried small schools, reconstitution, charters, high school transformation and the latest strategy turnaround now being implemented at Fenger where an effective principal was removed and caring teachers dismissed. Chicago schools are a national disgrace. It's time for the mayor to admit that the only benefit his hand picked ceo's have provided is making sure the money get to the right political/connected people. If schools are going to improve it is time for the mayor to get serious about education and provide the young people of Chicago with the type of leadership that is needed for communities that are in crisis. This doesn't mean that leaders should not improve academics, but it also means that he recognize that there are serious social ills in some communities that have to be addressed. They must be addressed in the school and in the communities that the schools are located in. We must target young people that have dropped out of school and feel that there is no hope. We must provide educational programs, jobs and job training. We must get these young people back to believing that if they do the right thing it will pay off. We must promote citizenship in our schools. We must staff schools with educators that care about these students and are not afraid of them. We can't keep going into schools with programs that are great for the provider but have no proven track record. We must provide extended learning opportunities for our students. We must provide extracurricular activities, we must show them that we care. We must make decisions that are good for all students, not just a few. we can't continue to send students into gang territories they are not familiar with, where even some police officers are afraid to navigate alone. We must invest in these communities if we are serious about saving these young lives. If we don't we will continue to lose them.

  • This is ridiculous. What a nice place to live. Black on black crime is stupid. This is the most corrupt generation of people ever known to man-kind. So people thought that once we get a black president, some foolish jesture people had was that this would in some crazy way make it better relations between black people. What a joke. This innocent child died at the hands of his on ignorant peers. These are not people they are animals devouring each other. The only thing i know kill thier on is animals. It's no way these stupid "black" animals should walk away innocent of this horrific crime. Where is the outcry of those two losers that's always in the media spotlights. Why can't the mayor or someone in authority set some kind of example, for these hoodlums. Home training probably has nothing to do with this. I just bet if you could find just one of these rug-rats and put them in a room with a relative of this young boy, you would find out just how much of a man they are. All those that had something to do with this senseless killing, are cowards, they why they had to do this in packs. Stupid non-God fearing cowards. Oh and by the way, i am a black american in the case you get me in the mix. I am just outraged and thats why my comments come off so hard. Now, get with that.
