Why is Fenger High Still In Businsess?

The comments on closing Fenger are still rolling in, and I'm eager to see what folks think about this op-ed piece of mine that is in today's Sun Times:

"Fenger is hardly the
only Chicago public high school with real problems. And, of course, the
board can't -- and shouldn't -- close down schools willy-nilly. But nor should schools be allowed to stagnate or deteriorate (Why is Fenger High still in businsess?).  "How did the Board of Education and
local officials let things get bad and then worse at the school? If the
school couldn't be fixed, why wasn't it closed? Why isn't more being
done to turn the school around now? And why hasn't the board considered
closing the school even at this late date?"
