Maggie Daley's program is rich, getting richer
The biggest grant from the state's
after-school fund went to a well-financed program overseen by Chicago's
first lady, Maggie Daley. After School Matters, already flush with the generous support of the
school district, city agencies and corporate donors, was granted $4.5
million from the new fund and $500,000 from another state fund.
After school, it's time for pork
In a new kind of political pork, state
officials awarded $12 million to more than 100 non-profit groups,
businesses, schools and churches for after-school programs that, in
some cases, served few students or failed to deliver on their promises,
the Tribune has found.
