Is it playtime, or is it child-centered learning? That's the question posed in this NYT article from over the weekend, which focuses on a Chicago family who, like an estimated 1.1 million families nationwide, has decided to unschool its children (basically homeschooling without the religious focus of many homeschoolers). Interesting facts from the story include the existence of a 100-member group called Northside Unschoolers, the fact that only 25 states require testing of homeschoolers, and the that Illinois and several other midwest states have the most flexible rules.
