Truancy Prevention: Would Daley Ever Do This?

"In an unprecedented undertaking, more than 6,000 letters went out to
parents of 12- through 18-year-olds with eight or more unexcused
absences earlier this week. The letters, signed by Street, schools
chief Paul Vallas and Philadelphia Family Court Administrative Judge
Kevin M. Dougherty, ordered parents to appear or face a fine or jail
time," according to this story from last week (Arena full of parents lectured on truancy).  "Early estimates put last night's crowd at more than 4,000, with a
line stretching down Broad Street at one point. People arrived in work
uniforms and carried babies. Some did homework and listened to iPods as
officials spoke; some booed the mayor as he took the podium."
