The Dropout Czar

Kia Gregory, the top columnist for Philadelphia Weekly, tackles the school district's truancy problem, which has garnered a lot of recent coverage -- here and a little bit here.  Gregory's well-written story is a feature piece that, at points, follows the district's truancy czar on his rounds.

"Its 9 oclock on a mild November morning as Gregory Patton walks into the Frankford Transportation Center at Bridge and Pratt,
a hub for bus and train routes that run throughout the city.  Patton is the Philadelphia School Districts truancy czar, a middleman in an effort by
the district, the transportation authority and the police to stem the citys truancy crisis.  At work less than a minute, Patton has already caught three students."
