CTU President Marilyn Stewart released the following statement in response to comments made by CEO Arne Duncan regarding a protest at City Hall today by Senator/Reverend James T. Meeks and the issue of merit pay for teachers.
Arne Duncan is skirting the real issue. The Chicago school system is bleeding good teachers who are leaving the district in droves because of low salaries and poor working conditions. At a time when we are losing our best and brightest teachers, Duncan is talking about a merit pay system based on an evaluation process he himself has said is flawed. Instead of attacking his teachers, he should be supporting them.
