Thanks to a friend for passing along this email about AMPS schools and next year's calendar: "The AMPS schools want their own calendars. This will cost more for transportation and forget about paying union members time and a half!"
Here's the email:
I apologize for how late this is today.
As we discussed at the meeting yesterday, schools
planning to make a change need to submit the documents
from CEdO to Barry and me by this Friday, May 25th.
Well review next week, help work out issues and get
to transportation by the June 1st deadline.
We also discussed trying to get to as FEW calendars as
possible. I mentioned that there are some that should
be appealing to many schools. I am attaching 4 of
Attached Calendars I tried to stay close to the
original names but these have been updated based on
the fact that we now have the 4 four restructured days
in the standard calendar
1. Standard calendar
2. Option C simple Swaps Veterans Day for the
day before Thanksgiving
3. Option C+ - Swaps Veterans Day for the day
before Thanksgiving AND moves most restructured days
to Fridays. Fall elementary report card pick up is
moved but spring remains Wednesday due to LSC
4. Option B+ Swaps Veterans Day, Columbus Day and
Pulaski Day for the rest of the Thanksgiving week AND
moves most restructured days to Fridays. Fall
elementary report card pick up is moved but spring
remains Wednesday due to LSC election. (Note: I didnt
hear any interest in a B simple)
Calendar ideas not attached.
§ A group of school expressed interest in a
mix of ½ and full restructured days. Those schools
are meeting via conference call tomorrow morning to
discuss and try to come up with one standard
suggestion tomorrow morning. I will email that out
when it is has been decided.
§ We have a few schools that proposed unique
calendars based on things that they have done in the
past. If your have discussed a very different calendar
with the AMPS office but dont appear on this list
expect a call from me tomorrow or Friday to go over
any next steps. This appears to apply to many high
schools. You should submit your paperwork unless you
hear otherwise. Feel free to call me with questions.
(I am also attaching the updated requests based on the
notes you added yesterday.)
One potential caution
I spoke to ISBE today to confirm the process required
for the second waiver needed for the holiday change. I
was assured that this is virtually guaranteed to pass
if we follow the right process. However, we do have to
conduct a public hearing in front of our board. There
is a small chance that will become a problem. The law
department is being extremely helpful in trying to
make sure we can get this done. I expect it to go
well and will keep you posted over the next couple
Even so, If you are making a holiday change, you will
have to tell your families and community the calendar
is pending ISBE approval as this process will not be
officially complete until the summer.
Thanks for your creativity and patience. I know this
process has been confusing and difficulty. Hopefully,
it will get easier each year.
