Word via the LAT that schools chief Roy Romer is slated to resign by fall suggests that the stage is being set, for better or worse, for a mayoral takeover of the troubled LAUSD (Romer Aims to Leave Post by Fall). The district has been repeatedly labeled failing by Mayor Villagarosa, who wants direct control over it like mayors in Chicago and New York City. Superintendent Romer has lately been tagged by board members for not promoting enough African American administrators. Romer took over the district in 2000.
