PROGRAM
DIRECTOR

In 1988, the
Rochelle Lee Fund (RLF) was founded to bring the love and power of reading
to Chicago public school students who often have limited reading resources,
role models, and support systems.  With the fundamental belief
that teachers can make a difference, RLF offers teachers a wide-range
of professional development opportunities about literacy, supports an
ever-growing network of Chicago educators, and provides teachers with
new, high-quality children's books for their classrooms.

Essential
Functions:

  • Develop policies,
      plans, and programming for RLF teacher professional development programs
  • Manage the implementation
      of all teacher professional development programs

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and produce
      the professional development components for all  RLF programs
  • Assist in the implementation
      and use of formal program evaluation for all professional development
      programs
  • Assist in the development
      of the program budget
  • Recruit, select,
      train, support, and supervise program staff, facilitators, workshop
      presenters, and volunteers
  • Serve as staff liaison
      to teacher advisory groups and selection board
  • Support teacher
      study groups in their implementation of goals
  • Oversee the application/registration
      process for all professional development programs
  • Produce an annual
      awards program, orientation sessions, program debriefing meetings and
      other events
  • Ensure the existence
      of up-to-date records of program policies, procedures, and outcomes

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years
      experience teaching in an elementary school (public urban setting preferred)
      with some experience in leadership roles and designing and implementing
      collaborative professional development or adult learning outside the
      classroom.  Program management experience preferred.
  • Experience and demonstrated
      interest in literature, in reading as a discipline, and in discussion
      as a tool for developing understanding
  • Ability to think
      creatively within the parameters of existing programs
  • Strong organizational
      skills with the ability to multi-task and follow through
  • Excellent oral,
      writing, interpersonal, and computer skills
  • Ability to drive
      to schools throughout Chicago (valid Illinois driver's license and access
      to a vehicle)

This year-round
position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Salary commensurate
with ability and experience.  Benefits include health insurance, 403(b)
retirement plan, paid holidays, vacation, and sick days.

POSITION TITLE:
STUDY GROUP COORDINATOR (part-time)

RLF supports study groups in both of
its major programs, The Annual Awards Program (AAP) and Reading from
Deeper Meaning (RDM).  AAP supports individuals and study groups,
which are school-based, teacher-led, collaborative learning communities
where teachers explore a group-selected literacy focus. RDM is an experiential
program that offers teachers the opportunity to develop as skilled facilitators
of discussion to deepen students’ understanding beyond the literal
level using children’s literature.  Study groups are teacher-led
and are designed to help teachers transfer the practice of discussion
into their classroom practice. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with RLF and
      RDM staff to develop and enhance study group programs
  • Develop and co-facilitate
      professional development workshops and events for study group leaders
      and members
  • Develop and implement tools
      and processes to enhance the study group program
  • Support and mentor study
      groups and individual teachers
  • Conduct program evaluation
      and provide input for future evaluation
  • Participate in RDM professional
      development for facilitators
  • Submit information and documentation
      of program activities and agendas
  • Participate in weekly program
      meetings and collaboration
  • Participate in other program
      responsibilities as agreed upon throughout the year

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • BA/BS; MA preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of  and
      commitment to continued learning about children’s literature, adult
      literature, literacy best practices, and professional development
  • Experienced teacher with
      a collaborative approach to teaching/learning
  • Excellent communication
      and facilitation skills
  • Strong organizational skills
      with the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to use the Internet
      and web communication for support of teachers
  • Ability to drive to schools
      throughout Chicago (valid Illinois driver’s license and access to
      a vehicle)

Preferred:

  • Experience in and familiarity
      with issues and challenges in the Chicago Public schools

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to
the Program Director

This part-time contracted
position is budgeted to begin July 1, 2007 at $20,000.

READING FOR DEEPER MEANING (RDM) FACILITATOR
(part-time)

Reading for Deeper Meaning (RDM) is
a professional development program for Chicago Public School teachers
of reading in grades five through eight. RDM includes monthly, facilitator-led
professional development as well as participation in school- or area-based
study groups.  Using children’s literature, RDM offers teachers
the opportunity to develop as skilled facilitators of discussion that
will deepen student understanding and comprehension beyond the literal
level.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with RLF and
      RDM staff to develop and enhance program
  • Attend and participate fully
      in all summer and monthly training sessions as well as a monthly study
      group with RDM facilitators.
  • Develop and facilitate monthly
      experience-based professional development workshops
  • Provide ongoing support
      and mentor individual teachers in their classrooms
  • Conduct program evaluation
      and provide input for future evaluation
  • Follow -up with RDM teachers;
      i.e. site visits, access to resources, communication (telephone calls,
      emails, meetings, letters)
  • Support RLF in book ordering
      and distribution of books
  • Read designated children’s
      literature and keep current on the trends
  • Regularly post and reply
      to comments on the RLF online forum
  • Submit information and documentation
      of program activities and agendas
  • Pursue additional professional
      development opportunities when possible
