Public schools' turnout high on 1st day Tribune
Nearly 385,000 Chicago students showed
up for the first day of classes, a turnout Mayor Richard Daley
attributed to attendance incentives and other school innovations.Officials estimate 415,000 students will enroll in the district's 425
schools this year. If that projection holds after final enrollment is
tallied this month, that would put first-day attendance at 93 percent,
a figure that has increased in the last five years.
