Inside Scoop On AQS High School [Austin Business and Entrepreneurship Academy]

A friend of a friend wants to know what the inside scoop is on AQS's sole high school, Austin Business and Entrepreneurship Academy.

Here's what he knows: AQS has 8 schools, 6 in Chicago.  This school is the only high school of the eight. The ABEA offers its
students a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for college,
while giving students the fundamentals of business. The school is
located in the newly refurbished Austin campus facility located at 231
North Pine Street. The ABEA welcomed its first class of just over 200 students in the
fall of 2006.

Anyone know anything, or how to find out more?

  • George, you said:

"(unless they're raiding the local public schools, like CICS Avondale has been doing all summer at the expense of Reilly, Murphy, and two other schools on the northwest side)."

What do you mean by this? Do you mean that they are marketing to parents and parents are making the decision to send their children to Avondale? That's what public school choice is all about. How does it hurt those schools if some of their children choose other alternatives? Doesn't it mean they're less likely to be over-crowded? Isn't that a good thing?

I agree Austin needs a general high school. It's too large of an area to be without one and it would take way too many charter schools to make up for its lack.

But don't romanticize the old Austin high school too much. It was pretty much a school of last resort to the residents in the neighborhood because of the violence. It is enough to make you weep when you realize that just a small walk away you'll find OPRF school with its full panoply of after-school activities, full menu of elective courses and, by and large, non-violent atmosphere.
