How To Keep Ren10 Kids Away From Options Schools

While some people are busy trying to slow down the closings of existing schools, others of you -- parents looking for better schools and teachers looking for (better?) jobs -- are wondering what their options are.

As you can see from the map to the left, there are lots of new and/or charter schools out there. And the charter and Ren10 folks are putting on an expo -- their second, apparently -- to feed the desire for more information:

Too bad this event is entirely uncoordinated with the Options program, which governs magnet, theme, and selective schools. Applications for those established and extremely popular schools were due before Xmas, as I recall. Why not coordinate the schedules and applications so that everyone can apply to schools at the same time? Then CPS would really have choice.

new Chicago public school for their children are invited to attend the second annualNEW SCHOOLS EXPO, presented by Parents for School Choice and

EXPO will showcase more than 75 campuses of new schools created through

Renaissance 2010 as well as pre-existing charter schools. These schools

include elementary and high schools across the city as well as schools that are

approved to open in 2009 and 2010. Many of these schools offer innovative

approaches to learning that could include: a longer school day, longer school

year, smaller classes, special themes and access to technology, internships or

other resources.
