At least some small portion of the hullabaloo at places like Gunsaulus (What's Going On At Gunsaulus Academy?) has to do with the early notice given to PATs there that they would not be able to stay at the school. Position cuts are a bear, and PAT dismissals are a sore point among teachers since they sometimes seem arbitrary, etc. The added element this year is the early notice given to PATs in some schools, giving them time and leverage to express their disappointment to kids and parents.
When have the PATs been notified in your school? When should they be notified? Earlier, later, or somewhere in between? Position cuts are a reality of life given CPS's enrollment and the economy, so we might as well talk about how to make them as smooth as possible.
