A recent Trib editorial (Separating the girls and boys ) endorses single-sex education as long as parents (and teachers) have choices and the approach isn't over-used.
Choice for teachers is a good point, given that most teachers are women and some -- many? -- might not be up for the boys-only environment. As I've argued on This Week In Education(Slate Hates Boys), this may be part of the resistance to boys-only classes and schools among some educators.
