So apparently four tenured teachers at Wells got these "you're fired"
letters yesterday, and were given 15 minutes to leave the building.
The justification for the reassignment that's used in the letters is
the Fresh Start agreement. I'm not sure if CPS has used Fresh Start to
remove teachers at other schools or in the past, but I don't recall
hearing about it last year.
If you're for the idea that teachers should be rated and removed based on their performance, not solely seniority or tenure, this is an important first step towards a much less tenure-driven process. If you're against teachers being removed for all but the most egregious behavior -- especially under an agreement that CTU helped fashion -- this is very bad news.
