Make It Simple…or Complicated

This happens so often in almost all parts of our lives, and I hear someone in design, architecture or construction do it almost every day:  Why do so many people assume that they need to make whatever they are talking about complicated and, indeed, perhaps incomprehensible?

It annoys me more than almost anything.  I have been developing a Designer’s vocabulary full of technical words and (especially) phrases for a LONG time.  And I very truly pride myself in being considerate and patient with anyone who is not in my “world” by translating, rephrasing and even shortcutting descriptions and specifications.  I actually like the challenge of making what I do less mysterious.  That’s not saying that everyone can understand enough to do it themselves—although more and more people do think that way, but that’s another topic-- but why use less intelligible vocabulary?

There is no doubt that making something sound more complicated and elitist than it really is might be an easy way to justify charging more money.  Hey…if I am doing something so complicated that I have to decipher it for you, doesn’t that make it worth more money?  I actually feel it’s the opposite.  For me, if my clients are given at least some understanding of the product, procedure or service that is going to be provided, they will appreciate the work, research and knowledge required to add this element to their project.

Any time I have to do anything for my car, I find that the most patient salesman or service provider is certainly as important to a transaction than the cheapest shop or showroom.  How about in the worlds of healthcare and insurance?  Pharmacists who talk to me about meds or insurance like I am a patient (not a doctor) are the ones I seek out the next time.  For some reason, I have become increasingly aware of those I encounter who work with others as I do.  And my life is calmer and much less complicated now.

Ponder this philosophy next time you either enter into a new realm of knowledge yourself or have to educate and work with a newcomer in your realm of expertise...please.
