Jesse Owens, not Samuel Gompers, should be the name of the South Side school

What fool in the Chicago Public School bureaucracy decided to remove the name of fabled, black Olympic star Jesse Owens and replace it with Samuel Gompers?   Samuel Gompers? Sure, he is a famous American who, as a founder of the American Federal of Labor, deserves to be remembered and honored. But Jesse Owens resonates... Read more »

Chicago Teachers Union can thank itself for some layoffs

The current Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) contract negotiated after the strike gives teachers raises averaging more than 17 percent over four years. Seventeen percent! A school system running a $1-billion deficit can’t afford it, and the CTU knew it. In other words, the union chose to get big pay increases for some teachers at the... Read more »

Getting kids to school — alive

Do punks and gangs run Chicago’s schools? You’d get that idea listening to parents and activists protesting the closings of 61 school buildings by Chicago Public Schools. The schools should remain open, protesters say, because kids will be caught in the crossfire of gang harassment, recruitment and warfare if they are forced to attend another... Read more »

Required reading for Chicago teachers

Even the New York Times gets it, but the Chicago Teachers Union doesn’t You think that only stingy conservatives are worried about where the Chicago Public School system is heading? What's really at stake in the Chicago teacher's strike

What’s behind the bitter school strike? “Our members are not happy. Is an outrageous 20 percent pay hike enough for greedy Chicago public school teachers?

The Chicago Teachers Union will be mulling over the up-to-20-percent  pay increase that the arbitrator Edwin Benn arbitrator has outrageously recommended. Confirming earlier Chicago Tribune reports that Benn would recommend a 15- to 20-percent pay hike, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said the recommendation would  go to the union’s house of delegates for a decision. Observers... Read more »

The Chicago school system was not designed for the benefit of the kids.

That’s not me, a white suburbanite, saying it. That’s Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (about 4:24 into the video). “A Tale of Two Missions,” with Juan Williams, lays it on the line. It’s a school sysystem weighed down by federal and state mandates, union demands and a fat, unresponsive bureaucracy. It’s worth a watch

Gee, who would have guessed it? As state Sen. James Meeks (D-Chicago) attempts to move his school choice legislation through the General Assembly, the usual suspects show up with their lame excuses for giving parents and students a healthy choice.
