Shakman decree responsible for today's mess

How the decree, named after Michael Shakman, was designed to purify Chicago’s political process actually set us up for government-by-and-for public employee unions.

Emanuel: Chicago school kids get the shaft

Mayor Rahm Emanuel today laid out some plain and tough talk about Chicago Public School teachers and what they’re paid. The school board–if Emanuel has his way and he will–could rescind a scheduled 4 percent (!) raise for teachers (at a time when other people are losing jobs or watching their own pay and benefits... Oprah, just go, why don't ya?

( Michael Tercha, Chicago Tribune / May 17, 2011 ) Oprah Winfrey hugs Tyler Perry while taping the second of two “Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular” episodes of the Oprah Winfrey Show at the United Center. Maybe, I thought, I was the only one turned off by the self-adulating excesses surrounding Oprah Winfrey’s departure from... Read more »

Chicago: America's City

Rahm Emanuel came up with a brilliant idea in his inauguration speech: Brand Chicago as America’s City. Here’s what he said: Look at the three of us being sworn in today. Treasurer Stephanie Neely and Clerk Susana Mendoza. Both are superb public servants who represent the best of our city. They are among a new... Read more »

Excerpts from Rahm Emanuel's speech

(The Tribune reports it here: ”Inside Emanuel’s campaign war chest. Mayor-elect raised more... Read more »

"Chicago Code" Fakery

An alderman running Chicago? That’s what we’re supposed to believe when we’re watching Fox’s new cop show, “Chicago Code.” That might sound plausible to Hollywood, but it makes it hard for us to watch. Especially when how Chicago really operates is a lot more entertaining.  Chicago Code, which I assume is its take on the... Read more »

Carol Moseley Braun brings the circus to town

But where are the clowns?      Quick, send in the clowns. Don’t bother, they’re here. -Lyrics from “Send in the Clowns,” by Stephen Sondheim The Chicago mayoral race threatened to become a boring seminar on issues until Carol Moseley Braun showed up as the “consensus” African American candidate.
