Democratic Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough’s election offices suppressed voting in Cook County suburbs by illegally turning away voters who were still in line at 7 p.m. the day before the election.
Voters still were in line at 7 p.m. at eight to ten of the 53 county early voting locations when they were shooed away. Despite election rules that require those in line to be allowed to vote, a Yarbrough spokeswoman said that time was needed to prepare the polling places for election day.
It should be noted that although the Cook County suburbs have turned increasingly Democratic, substational numbers of Republicans still vote there. According to the Democratic script it is Republicans who are plotting to suppress votes. You can bet if it were Republican county clerk offices that turned away voters who had been waiting outside in the cold, the story would have made national news, proving once again that the GOP has a grand plan to suppress voting.
As the Chicago Tribune story explained:
“The Cook County Election Judge Manual itself states that anyone in line when early voting ends for the day has the right to cast their ballot and must be allowed to vote," Ami Gandhi, the senior counsel for the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, said in a statement. " But tonight, voters came out the cold and waited for hours to cast their ballots, only to be turned away without explanation. That needless barrier undoubtedly disenfranchised Cook County voters.”
