What makes tronc (formerly Chicago Tribune) so valuable to Gannett?

Indeed, it's a puzzle why Gannett is so interested in buying tronc, formerly Tribune Publishing, when the outlook for legacy, printed newspapers appears so dismal? Here's as good of an explanation that I've seen.
