Why is this not being called a "hate crime?"

A white guy gets beaten by black men. Imagine if this had happened in Mount Greenwood, and it was one black guy who was beaten by a mob of white guys it would be proof of white racism. Although the victim says he wasn't beaten because he voted for trump (the assailants could not have known), people in the group of onlookers were shouting "hateful" things:

As the fight picks up, people on the sidewalk away from the struggle yell taunts that include "You voted Trump," "Beat his ass" and "Don't vote Trump."

There's laughter as Wilcox rolls on his back and covers his face. Two people hit and kick him. Wilcox gets up and tries to get back in his car, but someone repeatedly punches him until he slumps by the side of the vehicle.

Someone else then gets into the driver's seat of the Bonneville, and Wilcox tries to get him out. People shove him away, but Wilcox grabs onto a door frame and is dragged along as the Bonneville pulls away.

An interview with the victim is here.

Video of man being beaten is here.

  • When the hell is the president or anyone on the left going to denounce this crap? Death threats against trump, violent protests, etc? What if trump supporters were acting in this manner? The reactions by media or the criminal justice system should not change based upon the political opinions of the victim.

  • You are free to call this crime whatever you would like. It certainly appears that criminal assaults and batteries were committed under Illinois law. For these acts to be prosecuted as hate crimes under either Illinois or Federal law, the prosecution would have to prove that the attacks were motivated basically by race, color, religion or national origin.

Attacking someone for his political beliefs is assault and/or battery, but it is not legally a hate crime.

So then groups of whites can beat a black person and simply use the 'we assumed they were an Obama voter' plea to lessen the charge?

Hell, it appears we've just discovered a way to extinguish 'hate crime' from the public lexicon....we don't rent to Obama voters, we don't serve Obama voters, we don't hire Obama voters...etc.

  • In reply to jnorto:

Except that one of the black bystanders was yelling something about getting that "white" Trump supporter. Hatred was definitely involved, but it doesn't meet many people's definition of a hate crime because the victim didn't qualify--he was a white man.

  • In reply to Dennis Byrne:

One of the bystanders said that? What did the assailants say? We know what you think, but what can you prove?

  • In reply to jnorto:

Listen to and watch the video.

  • I see men committing a battery while bystanders shout "He voted Trump" and "Don't vote Trump." It looks like the same sort of violence that broke out at Trump rallies, motivated by the political hatred that has become too common in recent weeks. But political hatred will not support a conviction for hate crime under either ILCS 5/12-7.1 in Illinois or 18 USC Sec. 249 under the federal code.

The crime is anyway political hatred will not support a conviction for hate crime. Yes it crime in the political blind people. Always the victim is a poor people.dissertation writing services is a study about political crime.

  • This is ridiculous. Call it a hate crime, happy crime, crime crime. Wtf ever. Have we all completely lost our sense of true north? The guy got the shi$ kicked out of him for his political beliefs. And what do we hear from those that hate trump bc of his "hate"? Crickets.
