Checking Obama's or any other candidate's presidential qualifications is not racist

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States. --United States Constitution

So who, pray tell, is responsible for checking any presidential candidate, for place of birth, age and years of residency?

A variety of judges have dismissed citizen challenges of candidates based on the failure to meet these qualifications because the plaintiffs' lack of "standing." In other words, citizens don't have a direct enough interest or wouldn't suffer sufficient individual harm to have standing to file the suit.

Then who?

Who gets to legally and officially challenge a candidate for a failure to meet one or all of these requirements?

flagI raise this question again, because the charge that Donald Trump's "birther" campaign to determine whether Obama was born in the United States has been a threadbare trope repeated endlessly. (Here's one from Tribune columnist Rex Huppke.)

I'm not blessed with the gift of looking into other people's motives, so I don't know if Trump's campaign was inspired by a hatred of African-Americans. Nor should Trump--that perfect blockhead--be president. (Just as Hillary Clinton--that perfect goniff--should not be president.)

Not everyone who asks for proof a place of birth, age or residency should be accused of racism, but that, sadly, is today's simpleminded rhetoric. Asking for proof is a right of any or all citizens, and if Ted Cruz had won the Republican presidential nomination instead of Trump the same question could have, and should have, been asked of him. The Washington Post, for one, did look into it and discovered that yes, Cruz is a citizen, even though he was born in Canada, because his mother was a U.S. citizen.

So can we put aside for once the automatic and vile flinging about of the racism accusation?

  • Persisting in the birther garbage 4 years after the birth certificate came to light, and then claiming a few weeks ago to put an end to it is.

  • Yes, you're quite right that Trump was way over the top. (Isn't everything he does over the top?) But was he motivated by racism or was he being his blockheaded self. My comments are directed to people who automatically claim racism motivates any action they don't like.

Considering all his remarks and attacks, you still are reluctant to impute racism to him?

  • BTW, did you ever doubt Obama's citizenship?

  • Sure, he might be guilty of racism. But that's a surmise. For those who too easily throw around the racist charge, it's not a surmise but an established fact.
