This shouldn't be news for Illinois residents: They (we) are dead last in confidence in our state government.
That's according to a newly released Gallup Poll. Only 25 percent of Illinoisans are confident in what can only generously be called our Springfield follies. A thundering 74 percent lack confidence. Not that this would impress the assorted fools, gonifs and power-hungry thieves who run Illinois. They just don't give a damn what we think--as long as we, sheep-like--keep electing them. Not surprisingly, Illinois also was dead last in the last survey in 2014.
What's so striking is that the margin of distrust among Illinois residents is so large from the state that comes in second from bottom. Two-thirds of Rhode Island residents are mistrusting. That's a significant 8-percentage point difference between Rhode Island and Illinois.
Gallup attempts to explain why we're so down in the dumps:
Illinoisans' lack of confidence likely stems from the state's long history of political corruption, with several recent governors having been found guilty of crimes. The state is also in the midst of an eight-month-long impasse over the 2016 state budget between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic legislature.
Corruption and challenging economic times likely contribute to other states ranking among the least confident in their government. Louisiana, like Illinois, is renowned for corruption in politics, and many of the other lower-confidence states have had high-ranking elected officials convicted of crimes in recent years.
To put it mildly.
But here's what flummoxes me: If we so mistrusting of our state government, why do voters continually return incompetents and greedy personages to office, year after year? Are we so masochistic that we enjoy being miserable? Are we so timid that we can't stand up to the likes of House Speaker Michael Madigan and take control of our own lives? A pity.
