Did racism or NFL clout torch Will Smith's rightful Oscar for his role in Concussion?

I still can't believe that Will Smith didn't win an Oscar for best actor for his role in the Concussion. When I left the theater with my wife after seeing the movie I said that Will Smith had certainly nailed an Oscar.

So, I was amazed and disappointed when he wasn't even nominated. I wondered, "What could explain such stupidity?" It didn't take long the assertion to appear that racism explained it. Which also amazed me. After all, wasn't Hollywood the apex of political correctness? Then came the explanation that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was an old white man's organization, which I gather automatically makes it racist.

I don't argue with the explanation.

But there's also this: Concussion makes the National Football League appear to be greedy and uncaring as it fought the growing evidence that the violence inherent in NFL games was inflicting great damage on its players. Giving voice to that perception by awarding the movie an Oscar would have refocused the spotlight on the NFL, putting it in a bad light (deservedly so).  Leading to the question: Who would the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences least like to offend: the NFL or African Americans?

I don't argue with that explanation either. It's offered here; I know nothing about the author or the site.

But I offer a third explanation: Stupidity. Lunacy. On its merits alone, Smith's performance was superb, spectacular, moving, impressive and convincing. Go see the movie; I think you'll agree. And it will surely make you disgusted with the NFL.
