Hobson's Choice redefined: Presidential election from hell would be Bernie Sanders versus Donald Trump. How does one pick between Donald "Mad Dog" Trump and Bernie "Everything is Free" Sanders?
With Trump, you get a pig in a poke, not sure where he'd try to take the country. His campaign promises have been so vague that he could go anywhere once in office. And with his mindset and temper, I can't even try to imagine how he'd try to govern.
With Sanders, you know what you'd get: Pie-in-the-sky promises for free college and free everything else, with a vague demand that the filthy rich pay for it all. He sounds like a character out of Alice in Wonderland, or a parody of socialist candidates from a century ago.
But what if voters indeed are confronted with that choice? Who would win? Here are the poll results in a Trump versus Sanders race, as laid out by Real Clear Politics:
In the RealClearPolitics.com average of polls, Sanders leads 46.8 percent to 41.5 percent. NBC News/Wall St. Journal: taken 1/9-1/13, has Sanders leading by an impressive 54 percent to 39 percent. In the Quinnipiac poll, taken 12/16 - 12/20 Sanders is up 13 points, 51 percent to 38 percent. Polls taken last month by PPP (D) and FOX News have Trump up slightly.
Overall, the trend seems to be running in favor of Sanders. (Remember, a poll taken today is not necessarily predictive of future results.)
If it turns out to be a Sanders-Trump runoff, where will sane, realistic voters go? To a third party candidate? I would expect that turnout in such a race would be lower than the already pathetically low turnout characteristic of American elections. People who are angry at the "establishment" would be picking our next president.
The lesson? People who think that there is more to governing than being an "outsider" need to act fast, to get behind candidates who seem to have their heads screwed on correctly.
