Already, new Illinois auditor general Frank Mautino is called on to resign

Hardly with time to warm his chair, newly appointed Illinois auditor general Frank Mautino is called on to resign. The call has merit, seeing as how there are serious questions about whether the state's top auditor--the guy who is supposed to ferret out corruption--misspent his campaign funds. The call for his resignation came from Adam Andrezejewski, Founder of OpenTheBooks.com in the Daily Herald.

"...Mautino [formerly a Democratic representative from Spring Valley] didn't stop raising campaign

cash [after last fall's confirmation] -- even though he wasn't running for office any longer. He raised an additional $15,500 from longtime donors between the appointment vote and his swearing-in ceremony as auditor on Dec. 7.

The details:

This week, the noted downstate accountability group -- the Edgar County Watchdogs -- quantified $213,338.31 in campaign gas and vehicle repairs paid by Mautino's political committee to one local vendor since 2005: Happy's Super Service Station in hometown Spring Valley.

There are others: $20,000 a year average, or about $55 a day, over 10 years for "gas" and "gas and vehicle repairs." Nearly $34,000  in state reimbursements since 2005 for travel. About $33,000  spent at his wife's family's restaurant, Alfano's Little Sicily in Spring Valley. And more. Mautino is House Speaker Michael Madigan's guy. One can reasonably ask why Madigan would appoint someone with such questionable background when a better candidate, state Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) was available. Another sharp stick in the eye of Illinois taxpayers by Madigan and his sheep. As Andrezejewski noted:

Last year, Republican congressman Aaron Schock resigned from office after newspaper disclosures of alleged misappropriated gas and travel reimbursements. With Mautino, the gross amounts of the questionable transactions could dwarf the allegations against the congressman.

How long should we wait for Democrats to be as outraged over Mautino as they were over Schock?

  • "But for one state senator and 10 mostly freshman state representatives, the Mautino appointment vote exposed the bipartisan corruption that is Illinois politics. Republican leadership in both chambers pressured their own caucuses to nearly unanimously approve Mike Madigan’s deputy as auditor." [Adam Andrezejewski]

Your fellow Republicans are also to blame.

  • That they couldn't stand up to Madigan is disgraceful. What did they get in return? Sellouts.
