Finger snap, don't clap

I had heard that finger snapping instead of clapping had become de rigueur in some politically correct places, especially on campus. I encountered it earlier this month at Palatine Township High School District 211  public hearing on a transgender student wanting to use the girls locker room. Invariably, the finger snapping came from one side of the room, the side wanting to give the student full access to the girls locker room.

Searching for "finger snappiing instead of applause" on the Internet, I came up with  383,000 hits. No one is quite sure of how the practice got started except many agreed that it came from a political correct notion that clapping is a "trigger," reminding some people in the audience of bad things.

One of the best explanations I found is here and here.
