In Wisconsin motorists can eat their road kill without telling the cops

Motorists who kill deer in auto crashes no longer need to contact local police to get a permit allowing them to keep the game meat.--Wisconsin Post Crescent.

Well, that's a relief.

Actually, you still have to report the road kill to the cops if the wildlife caused $1,000 or more in damages to your car. Which pretty much would apply to every deer you hit, but not to skunks. Unless, I suppose, it costs you more than $1,00o to get the skunk stink out of your car after squashing one of those cuet little critters.

But here's the real surprise in the story: "About 26,000 deer are killed by vehicles every year, according to the [Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources]."

  • You know...I actually don't agree with this. I am a hunter. My last deer was actually a road kill deer I hit after an unsuccessful time in the field. I liked the fact that I needed to provide a "chain of custody" so to speak after I hit that deer and dropped it off at the processor.

Eh...even so, poachers take their prey and dress 'em out in the privacy of their homes, so it probably isn't going to change things much.
