Jesse Owens, not Samuel Gompers, should be the name of the South Side school

What fool in the Chicago Public School bureaucracy decided to remove the name of fabled, black Olympic star Jesse Owens and replace it with Samuel Gompers?

Jesse Owens

Jesse Owens

Samuel Gompers? Sure, he is a famous American who, as a founder of the American Federal of Labor, deserves to be remembered and honored. But Jesse Owens resonates more with the West Pullman community that was served by the school. Owens was the African-American track star who crapped all over Adolph Hitler's fantasy about the superior aryan race by winning gold medals at the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin.

The good news is that support is growing for bringing back the Jesse Owens

name. Some people charge that ditching the name in the first place was a sign of racism. Perhaps. But I also suspect that some  idiot at CPS thought that a labor leader deserves more recognition. Clearly, the idiot was wrong.

By the way, we must take note that native Chicagoan Ralph Metcalfe came in a close second in the sprint behind Owens. Metcalfe

became a prominent Chicago politician and has one of the Chicago downtown federal buildings named after him. My own view is that Metcalfe never got the full boat recognition that he also deserved for shoving it to Hitler.

Here's the race:

  • Excellent point, Dennis. What that "idiot" conspired to do is especially reprehensible in that Owens' birthday just passed on September 12. Check it out on my blog in my series on famous birthdays.

  • Wow, that second video shows a guy pole vaulting into what looks like a bed of sand. Ouch!
