MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry questions whether your kids "belong" to you.

I have trouble believing that she really meant what she said:

  • "[W]e have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to their communities."
  •  "[We] haven't had a very collective notion that these are our children."

To give her the benefit of the doubt; I think that she's saying that the "whole community" has a responsibility to care all children. However, if she's saying that kids also don't belong to their parents or families, that kids exclusively belong to the community then she is a matchless idiot.

Listen to her entire remarks and let me know what you think she meant.

  • Your title seems to jump to conclusions.. Harris-Perry is clearly expressing the idea of community, that everyone has a stake in raising a child, in the sense of supporting good schools, health and safety for all children in the community, whether that's a neighborhood, a city, a state, a nation, the world. This is not a radical idea, nor incompatible with traditional Christian values.
After all, Jesus did say In Matthew 19, "Let the children come to me; do not try to stop them; for the kingdom of Heaven belongs to such a these."

Harris-Perry was also echoing Hilary Clinton's observation that it takes a village to raise a child.

When Aquinas quotes scripture it is likely time for all to take cover. These Marxists/Orwellian notions evidence continued erosion of belief in personal responsibility, excellence, initiative and achievement. When more responsible people understand that our plutocrats have no interest in educating our children, we will have some chance of making progress/evolving beneficially.
