A first, even for Chicago: Voters re-elect judge later found to be temporarily insane.

Well, that was before she was found not-guilty of battery for reasons of insanity,  although voters knew that she had some serious problems when they re-elected her to another six-year term. Cook County Judge Cynthia Brim had been on trial in Will County for shoving a Cook County sheriff's deputy in the Daley Center.

At least not in my memory have voters done such a thing.

She had  been hospitalized five times since her 1994 election after going off her anti-psychotic meds, according to testimony. In 2004, firefighters removed her from a courtroom and took her to a hospital, said psychiatrist Matthew Markos. After last year's arrest last year she was hospitalized for 20 days showing signs that she was catatonic, confused, irrational and exhibiting paranoia and psychosis.

This post is not intended to make light of Brim's mental illness; she has my sympathy. This post, rather, is intended to make fun of Cook County voters. Here is another sign of their own confused, irrational and catatonic behavior. Just as long she is part of the Machine. In her re-election, she had been backed by the Cook County Democratic Party and a campaign group  called the Committee for Retention of Judges in Cook County funded by--guess who?--the judges. Loyalty and watching each others' backs is the coin of the realm, even for judges, even when they close ranks behind someone whom you've got to wonder why she was slatted for the bench in the first place. They were just being, you know, nice.

She was not endorsed by some bar associations and editorial pages because of her shaky mental health and questions about her competence on the bench

No wonder Rod Blagojevich and so many other incompetents, crooks and now candidates for the home keep getting elected. Cook County Democratic voters can't be shamed.

The question now is whether she will be removed from the bench or allowed back on. Will a bunch of cases be appealed because she may have been nuts?
