An answer to the violence on Chicago's streets

"Laws cannot create a peaceful person out of someone who has not experienced, especially in his or her family, the love that teaches internal discipline. Without peace of soul, there can be no real peace on the streets, in our homes or among nations." --Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago

So starts another wise column from blogger Pat Hickey in "With both hands."

When I talk about the "culture of violence" that has gripped our nation and is a contributing factor (notice: I did not say the only factor) in the shootings that has afflicted our city and nation, Hickey and Cardinal George say it so much better than I. George and Hickey (whose heart and beliefs play out in building men at Leo High School) have some advice for those who look to a single, simple answer to bring peace back into the lives of so many.

  • His Eminence is one stand up guy, Dennis. Unlike his critics, the man walks the talk and actually gets somewhere, beyond a pre-packaged conclusion.

  • Buts laws can protect the peaceful person from those who are without peace in their souls.

  • BTW, a Chinese proverb riffs on the same theme: "If there is right in the soul, there will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.

  • The Catholic Church, with rare exception, as does the rest of society, has degraded and feminized and confused boys and young men as to what their roles in society should be.

Little is expected of them in traditional male roles --honor, courage and valor-- and much in the way of being the predator, the dumb sex, the slacker, the raper and the killer; and the boys and young men who do not have the luxury of Cardinal George taking a few moments or the parish priest taking some time away from his golf game (OR A FATHER AT HOME OR EVEN ATTENTIVE), will doe as he is told: create mayhem and kill.

No law will stop this from happening in ever increasing numbers. Two generations of boys and men have been lost to well meaning social experimenters and government-as-daddy programs.

  • 100% on the money, Richard. Would that more priests could be half the priest Cardinal George happens to be and fewer boys would play at being men.
