Why Wrigley Field must be destroyed

Here's a great read about why the Cubs won't win until they tear down Wrigley Field. The real "curse" isn't Billy Goat, but the ball park itself. I always thought it was a dump anyway, offending the sensibilities of certain fans who regarded the place as some sort of shrine. A shrine for losers, if you ask me. Even as a White Sox fan, I occasionally ventured to Wrigley in the 1950s when "loser" was too soft of a name to call the pathetic Cubs. Back then, before Wrigleyville turned into a yuppie enclave, so few people went there that the upper deck was regularly closed.

The Wall Street Journal was sympathetic enough to run a rebuttal.

  • It's a shrine to futility.

  • I have some advise for White Sox fans, STAY OUT OF THE CUBS BUSINESS!

  • Byrne says keep marriage heterosexual, because it's always been that way. Why not be consistent and keep Wrigley, because it's always been there?

Anyway, does Byrne prefer the shrine to public financing of private businesses (aka the Cell)?
